Our story

Born in Reunion Island, Payanké is inspired by a way of life where flip-flops are part of everyday living. Under the sun, on the sand, in the city or at home, they accompany every moment of the day. Here, a flip-flop is not just an accessory: it must be comfortable, durable, and able to stand the test of time. From this reality came our ambition: to create a flip-flop that respects the spirit of the one we have always known, while meeting today’s expectations.

In Reunion Island, we don’t say “flip-flops”, we say “savate deux doigts.” An essential part of everyday life, worn for generations and deeply rooted in the island’s culture. We grew up with it and decided to rethink it without changing its essence: a faithful base, improved with greater comfort, refined finishes, and colors inspired by Réunion.

WHY PAYANKÉ?

Payanké is the Creole pronunciation of Paille-en-Queue, the iconic bird of Reunion Island. A symbol of freedom, lightness, and escape, it perfectly represents the spirit of our brand. Like this bird, we love wide open spaces, simplicity, and the deep connection with the nature that surrounds us.

OUR COMMITMENT

From the beginning, our goal has been to create a flip-flop that combines comfort, quality, and respect for the environment. Through our research and meetings with various manufacturers in Asia, we discovered that it was possible to produce high-quality flip-flops using natural rubber sourced from plantations managed with more responsible agricultural practices. This solution convinced us through its durability, comfort, and reduced environmental impact. We therefore chose to make our flip-flops using natural rubber in order to offer a product suitable for everyday use.

We believe that everyday products can be made differently. That is why we adopt a more eco-friendly approach and work with partners who share our vision of a more responsible production. 

Our goal is simple: to offer durable and comfortable flip-flops designed for everyday wear, while minimizing our environmental footprint.
